At Skinner & Ossakow DDS and Associates, we believe in gentle dentistry. While it is always our goal to save your natural teeth, when an extraction is necessary, we will work to make it as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
Tooth extractions may be necessary for a variety of reasons including decay, injury and in preparation for orthodontic treatment. During an extraction, we make patient comfort a top priority. We will typically use a local anesthetic to numb the immediate area. Patients may also be provided other forms of sedation if needed or desired. Our office specializes in IV sedation, oral sedation and laughing gas.
During the extraction, we will use special dental tools to carefully and quickly pull the tooth from its socket. Most patients find they feel little-to-no pain or discomfort during the tooth removal. Immediately after the extraction, we get to work on controlling any bleeding. The patient will be asked to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes in order to help a blood clot to form at the extraction site. For the next day, the patient should take extra measures to avoid disturbing this clot. This includes avoiding smoking, using a straw, consuming alcohol or exercising vigorously. The patient can reduce swelling by applying an ice pack for up to 20 minutes at a time during the first day.
At Skinner & Ossakow D.D.S. and Associates, we also provide wisdom teeth removal procedures. The wisdom teeth, also called the third molars, usually develop during late teens or early twenties. These are often removed because there is little space for them. Wisdom teeth also often grow at a severe angle which can cause damage to other teeth.
