Gum Disease Treatment in Centreville

Periodontal dentistry is an area of specialization that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment of gum disease and placement of dental implants. Your Skinner & Ossakow D.D.S and Associates dentist is familiar with all the latest techniques used to diagnose and treat periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease occurs when the gums become irritated due to exposure to tartar, bacteria and plaque. The first sign is usually swollen and irritated gum tissue that bleeds during brushing and flossing. Patients are encouraged to get treatment during this time, as the condition can progress quickly. Left untreated the gums will retract and pull away from the teeth. This creates spaces known as periodontal pockets. These can become infected with bacteria and plaque, which will allow the condition to spread throughout the mouth. When the infection reaches the jawbone and the connective tissues of teeth, tooth loss can occur.

We offer several periodontal services that may be recommended based on the severity of your condition.

Scaling and Root Planing

This is one of the most proven treatments for periodontitis. The process involves using dental tools to reach below the gum line to remove tartar and plaque. Then, we smooth out (plane) the root surfaces to prevent future buildups.

Root Surface Debridement

This procedure is a deep cleaning of the root surfaces. Buildups of tartar, bacteria and plaque are removed during this non-surgical procedure. Following this process, gum disease should stop spreading, and recovery will follow.

Bone Grafting

This procedure is used to promote new bone growth. By applying artificial bone material to a deteriorated jawbone, we can restore the structure and provide strength. The jawbone will then be able to provide support for the teeth or dental implants.
