What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium metal posts or frames that are surgically placed into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once your dental implants are in place, we can mount replacement teeth onto them.

Because implants are fused to your jawbone, they provide exceptionally stable support for your new teeth. Since your new artificial teeth are attached to an implant, your teeth won't slip or shift in your mouth. This makes eating and talking much easier. It also feels a lot more natural than some other options that are available.

For some people, implants are the only option due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging. A great advantage of implants is that none of your adjacent teeth must be prepared or ground down to hold your new teeth in place.

In order to receive implants, you must have healthy gums and enough healthy jaw bone to support an implant. One of the most important advantages of implants is that once they are placed in the jawbone, they will be accepted as a part of the body and prevent the bone deterioration that usually comes with tooth loss.

Skinner & Ossakow D.D.S. and Associates specialize in endosteal implants. Endosteal implants are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. Once your surrounding gum tissue has healed, you will need a second surgery to connect a post to the original implant. Finally, an artificial tooth or teeth are attached to the post individually or on a bridge or denture based on your unique needs.
